Hi there. My name is Josh Brake. My day job is teaching engineering at Harvey Mudd College, but on the weekends I love to make pizza. As a Connecticut native who now lives on the West Coast, I’m pretty far from Wooster Street and Pepe’s Pizzeria and Sally’s Apizza.
Fortunately, with a little bit of practice and my trusty Ooni oven I have learned how to get a good New Haven-style pizza in your own backyard.
I created this Substack and phdpies.com to share the lessons I’ve learned about making great pizza at home with you. You can support the site by purchasing recommended gear using my affiliate links.
Join the community!
I’m planning to use this Subtack to accomplish a few main goals:
To build a community around home pizza making, sharing resources, tips, and tricks.
To share my experience with gear, recipes, and other pizza-related experiments I’m trying out.
To hear comments and questions from you about your own pizza-making journey.
I’m hoping to publish something once or twice a month. You can expect every issue to have a picture of some delicious pizza and an idea that you can apply in your own kitchen.
Sound cool? I hope that you’ll subscribe and come along for the ride!
How you can support PhD Pies
I created PhD Pies as a place to share my love of pizza. The best way you can support your work is by engaging with the community and sharing the PhD Pies Substack and website with your family and friends. If you want to go beyond that, you can support this work financially in a few ways:
Buy your gear using the affiliate links on the gear page over at phdpies.com/gear. Every time you buy something using my link, I get a small commission.
Become a paying subscriber. In addition to the free content, becoming a paid subscriber will get you access to subscriber-only discussion threads and priority support from me with any questions you have about your own pizza-making journey.
If a paid subscription isn’t in the cards right now, you can make a one-time donation using https://www.buymeacoffee.com/phdpies.
